Hair loss is the unwanted and unconscious shedding of hair. The most common type of hair loss in men is male-pattern baldness. This appears in a big percentage of all men. This occurrence does not distinguish between race, social status and age.

Male-pattern baldness usually appears in the late thirties and early forties. In some men this can happen even in their twenties. It starts with a gradual receding of the hair line on the forehead and deepening of the temples. Then, the hair starts thinning and shedding on the top of the head and on the crown. Next, these spots become bald and meet with each other. Thus, the typical male-pattern baldness is formed. It is also characterized as a horse shoe or the letter U. The remaining hair on the scalp is weak and cannot re-grow the bald places. In some man the process continues until the whole head is completely bald.

Hair loss appears in women as well, but is less common. It follows a different pattern named female-pattern baldness. It involves the thinning of the hair on the front and on the crown, but rarely leads to bald spots.

Hair is important for the overall physical appearance of people. Therefore, over the centuries men have tried to hide in different ways their growing baldness. They have used various toupees, head pieces, combing methods etc. The 21st century has gradually introduced wider acceptance of baldness. Now, there are famous musicians, actors, athletes and politicians who have altered how we perceive baldness. Famous names such as Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan have made it attractive and masculine to be bald today. This however does not mean that bald men have stopped grooming. They spend many hours maintaining their completely shaven head and protecting it from the averse effects of the environment.

Men’s Hair Loss

Finasteride is the generic name for the brand name drugs Proscar and Propecia. Finasteride inhibits Type II 5-alpha-reductace, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shrinks or miniaturizes the hair follicle, eventually leading to baldness. Taken daily a 1mg dosage of Finasteride can effectively lower DHT levels by as much as 60%.  Finasteride has been recommended as the first line of attack for all men interested in treating their male pattern baldness.

Minoxidil was the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Initially widely used to treat high blood pressure, a very interesting side effect of the drug was growing hair in unexpected places like on their cheeks and the back of their hands; some even grew hair on their foreheads. Used topically Minoxidil can slow the progression of hair loss and re-grow some hair.

Women’s Hair Loss

Physicians are reluctant to use systemic treatment and drug companies aren’t exactly falling over themselves to test existing or new drugs for their ability to prevent and treat female pattern baldness.

The best course of action available is Minoxidil 2% Topical Treatment applied directly to the scalp.
